Make sure the 'dimples' side of the Water Ring is facing upwards when placed in the pot. Water well when first planting and allow space at the top of the pot for the Water Ring to expand and to act as a watering reservoir. Any liquid fertilizer will be held within the Water Ring to give nourishment throughout the season.
